How Smart Energy Hubs can unlock more value from your energy assets

  • Optimisation of energy-intensive equipment, such as chillers or HVAC (LoadFlex), for enhanced efficiency
  • Installation and operation of onsite battery energy storage systems, otherwise known as behind-the-meter (BTM) battery energy storage systems (BESS)
  • Maintenance of solar PV systems to ensure optimal performance
  • A sophisticated Smart Energy Hubs tech stack that enables dynamic operation of multiple assets for maximum flexibility.

Customers can seamlessly integrate various solutions and components of a Smart Energy Hub to address their specific site requirements. Shell Energy’s Smart Energy Hubs are engineered to unlock new value streams from both existing infrastructure and new solutions, while managing energy market risks.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) – the backbone of Smart Energy Hubs

A Shell Energy-funded battery energy storage systems (BESS) is a key component of a Smart Energy Hub, enabling large businesses to maximise energy efficiency and revenue potential.

Shell Energy offers a turn-key BESS solution, which includes funding, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining the system over a 15-year term. The battery is operated to provide multiple services to the site and grid, including:

  • Network demand charge management
  • Wholesale market participation
  • Ancillary services.

Customers receive fixed and variable revenue streams from hosting the battery at the site, through an annual License Fee and profit share mechanism.

Behind-the-meter battery energy storage systems (BTM BESS) plays a significant role in Australia’s energy transition, with the adoption of batteries expected to significantly scale in the next decade. Despite this, barriers such as high upfront costs, installation complexity and regulatory challenges remain key considerations for many customers.

Why choose Shell Energy?

Shell Energy is one of Australia’s biggest energy suppliers to large industrial customers.

We work together with our customers to understand their businesses to develop bespoke solutions that help save on energy, meet sustainability targets and in some cases, access new sources of revenue.

Shell has been supplying energy to Australians for close to 125 years and Shell Energy has been ranked number one for large customer satisfaction for the 14th consecutive year in the independent Utility Market Intelligence (UMI) survey.

Complex projects are core to Shell Energy’s DNA and our in-house engineering and project delivery capabilities allow us to navigate the technical and regulatory requirements of Smart Energy Hubs projects. Additionally, Shell Energy can finance the set-up and ongoing costs of new projects, enabling large businesses to access benefits immediately with zero upfront costs.
