Meet Nick Jones

Head of Commercial and Sales, Energy Solutions

Nick Jones, Head of Commercial and Sales, Energy Solutions, tells us why he loves helping customers on their path to achieving net zero emissions.

What is your role at Shell Energy?

I lead the Energy Solutions Commercial and Sales team within the Shell Energy B2B Retail division. We work closely with customers to make it easier for them to take control of their energy usage to meet their commercial and sustainability goals. We provide tailored solutions to our customers’ business to help them reduce energy consumption, cost, and emissions.

I’m passionate about building our team and creating a loyal and caring culture that people want to be a part of. A typical week sees me working closely with customers to help them solve their energy challenges. Each meeting is different, ranging from early discussions about their business’s energy and emission reduction goals to identifying the best energy management solutions to meet set objectives. Our team will step our customers through the options they have with Shell Energy, and ensure they have the detailed information and data they need to make an informed decision.

Leading and supporting our wider Commercial and Sales team is something I am passionate about, and I enjoy supporting them to be successful. I am a big believer in leading from the front and creating new opportunities for the team to drive growth for both our division and Shell Energy.

Why Shell Energy?

I always heard great things about Shell Energy (formerly ERM Power). The business has a reputation, as an electricity retailer, for having a really positive culture that enables and encourages its employees.

What do you enjoy most about working at Shell Energy?

It’s a great environment with lots of good people. I really enjoy the project-based work and building impactful relationships with customers. I’ve also learnt an incredible amount about safety, compliance and due diligence, which is paramount in this industry.

The power of choice with flexible working arrangements…

Flexible working arrangements give employees the power of choice. If you can work effectively and efficiently from home, Shell Energy offers you the opportunity to access this type of flexibility. It encourages a stable work-life balance, which I think is really important

What are some of your career highlights with Shell Energy?

A key highlight has been successfully helping our customers on their path in achieving net zero emissions through tailored energy management plans that suit their business operations. I have learnt so much through this process and the journey has been and continues to be extremely rewarding.

I’ve also had the opportunity to receive executive-level mentoring in my role. Through this, I was supported to further understand how to ensure, when building a new offer to market, that detailed due diligence is conducted, to enable an informed decision. Patience is very important and if you follow the process, your hard work is noticed. Shell will support something that makes sense.

What are the keys to success at Shell Energy?

Develop a clear understanding of the wider business objectives and always take the time to strategise and plan accordingly. Consistently focus on doing your job well and being patient and humble. Good performance is rewarded, which I have experienced within my career path at Shell Energy.

I initially started under a six-month contract, and since then I have acted in a General Manager role, and now lead a diverse, strategic and experienced team.

I’m excited about the future of energy because…

There’s a strong renewable energy mix opening up in the global market that will enable more businesses to achieve net zero emissions faster. I’m excited for the future with Shell Energy in enabling a way forward through a strong market presence that brings a product and service suite of solutions to support our customers.

Do you have any advice for someone considering a career with Shell Energy?

My biggest piece of advice would be to work hard and be humble. You have the opportunity to contribute to reducing Australia’s carbon emissions and making an impact on our country’s future, so make the most of it.
